Participation Guide

Thinking about volunteering? Start prepared.

These general steps help you explore research with confidence. They are not health advice.

General steps

  1. 1

    Learn the basics

Start with general guides so the words and steps feel familiar.

  2. 2

    Explore categories

Think about which kinds of research you are curious about, such as lifestyle or observational studies.

  3. 3

    Prepare your questions

Use our checklist to note what you want to ask a study team.

  4. 4

    Talk with your provider

Your own healthcare provider can help you think through whether a study fits your situation.

  5. 5

    Contact an independent study team

Only the study team can explain their protocol and decide who may take part.

Participation preparation checklist

  • Read the full public listing for the study, including its purpose and location.
  • Write down how many visits are expected and how long each one may take.
  • Ask who to contact with questions during and after the study.
  • Review the informed consent document slowly and ask about anything unclear.
  • Confirm that you can leave the study at any time.
  • Talk with your own licensed healthcare provider before deciding.
  • Keep copies of every document you sign.
